Chrysin

Chrysin may be used by many athletes to boost testosterone, but does that mean it really works? Some recent studies might suggest it may not.

What is Chrysin?

Back in the early 1980’s, laboratory tests concluded that Chrysin could be used as an effective aromatase inhibitor. Aromatase inhibitors operate by blocking the activity of the enzyme called aromatase. This enzyme is used by the body to convert androgen hormones like testosterone into estrogen. By limiting this conversion, Chrysin was supposed to prevent the body from producing more estrogen while it preserved and stimulated the production of more testosterone. More testosterone means more explosive gains in muscle, strength, and even metabolism.

Is Chrysin Effective?

But since these first tests nearly 30 years ago, follow up studies have been conducted that show Chrysin may not be as effective as previously believed. The growing consensus among experts and researchers is that Chrysin has no effect on estrogen levels whatsoever. This opinion has formed in the wake of studies that showed that Chrysin did not have the ability to traverse across walls of cellular membranes where it could actually affect the body.

Is Chrysin Safe?

Further research has suggested that Chrysin may also even be harmful to the body. One study conducted among rats showed that Chrysin did not raise testosterone levels. Instead, the rats began to gain unhealthy amounts of weight. This rapid gain in fat caused some researchers to conclude that Chrysin may interfere with normal thyroid activity, throwing off hormones and triggering weight gain.

Conclusion

With all the evidence mounting up against Chrysin, it probably might be best to avoid using products that contain it altogether. With so many other aromatase inhibitors out there, it shouldn’t be hard to find a more effective and safer alternative.
